International Women's Day + Anne Cath Vestly

I've been busy lately! Here are a couple of my favorite Doodles that I've contributed to the team so far.
This Doodle celebrates Anne Cath Vestly, a children's book writer/illustrator/and actress. You should read more about her here!

This Doodle celebrates International Women's Day. This one was a lot of fun! CBS also did a spot on the Doodle team, released alongside this Doodle, which you can watch here!

Crabs: The Legend of Tembo Character Design

As I was unpacking my apartment in California, I found some physical print outs of some of the character design I did on The Legend of Tembo. It was really exciting because when the studio closed, I couldn't grab any of my files. I thought these were gone forever! Throughout this week, I'm going to post some of the designs I helped out with. I don't think that any of these would have made it all the way to production, but at one point my art director asked me to go through and do a quick pass on a lot of the background characters. Today, I bring you crab designs!
These were supposed to be part of a sequence where baby Tembo washes ashore in India, but that scene was cut even before the studio closed. Lots of fun with shapes on these!

Mary Leakey's 100th birthday

My first ever Google Doodle went live just a few minutes ago in the US!

Here's a little blurb I wrote, lifted from the Doodle blog.

Today we celebrate the life and work of anthropologist/archaeologist Mary Leakey. In this Doodle, I wanted to highlight Leakey's work in the most charming way possible. I began by focusing on her discovery of the fossilized Proconsul skull, but ultimately decided to depict a scene of her excavation of the Laetoli footprints. As a fun touch, I included her pet dalmatians, whom are often included in old photographs of Leakey.

When I moved forward with color, I wanted to make sure that the landscape felt hot, since she worked mostly in Africa. I also wanted to make sure that the illustration still felt fun and inviting.

This was a fun Doodle to work on! Hats off to Mary Leakey and the fabulous legacy she has left behind!

As a side note, I have been posting to my Tumblr a lot more frequently! If you use Tumblr, give me a follow over there!

Doodle 4 Google

My first press photo with the Doodlers…aah! But in all seriousness, if you are, have, or know a creative kid age 18 or under, make sure that they enter the Doodle 4 Google contest this year! The grand prize gets you a $30k college scholarship, a $50k technology grant to your school, a trip to New York City, and your drawing on the front page of Google for a day. Now those are some pretty sweet digs. Details can be found on the Doodle 4 Google website!

Christmas

Here are a couple pieces of artwork I made for my family for Christmas this year. The top is a drawing of myself, my sister, and my brother back in the mid 90's. The second is my mom's little Westie terrier, Izzy. Merry Christmas, everyone!

Updates!

Hey everyone! It's long overdue, but I wanted to send a big thanks to everyone who stopped by my table at CTN-X. It was great to put a face to so many names, and I definitely had a blast!

(bottom photo is courtesy of the lovely Lily Williams)

Lots of things have been happening lately, including another show at Bear and Bird. Here are the 4 pieces I submitted for Small Stuff 6 this year. All are gouache on aquarelle, and may still be available for purchase at their online store.
I also am part of the Ramones themed show with Susanita's Little Gallery! Susana is trying to crowd fund a book full of the work by the artists. Check it out!
And finally, the big news is that I'm joining the Google Doodler team full time up in Mountain View, CA, starting in January. It's been a couple months of craziness, but I feel incredibly blessed to be landing with such a great group of artists.
To life's next adventure!

new project

I'm back at home after a long trek from Florida to Ohio. I bought a new Cintiq 22HD right before I got laid off at Digital Domain, so I'm making good use of it! Starting up a new personal project. More to come!

Updated Portfolio

Hey guys.  I'm currently looking for work!

PORTFOLIO

RESUME

This has been 2 of the craziest weeks of my life.  South Florida was hit with a hurricane last week, flooding many of the main streets in Port St. Lucie.  People were stranded from their cars--couldn't get home.  We had 2 days off from work because of this.  On that Wednesday, my roommates and I moved into a new house.  That Saturday, I took on one of the craziest freelance projects (deadline-wise) I have ever been involved in and ALSO managed to unpack my new house.  On Tuesday, all the employees at Digital Domain Tradition Studios were told that we were having financial issues, but we would be OK.  They told us that they wouldn't have made a press release if they hadn't found a solution to the problem. This morning, we were all told to pack up our things and head out the door.  All 300+ of us.  A very, very sad day for animation.

It could be worse, though.  I'm healthy.  I'm generally pretty happy despite all of this.  I get to spend more time on my personal work now, and am looking forward to seeing my family for an extended period of time.  (And being an only child for the first time in 21 years--my parents are no longer empty nesters! Haha!)

Fortunately/Unfortunately

Some artists at work are trying to put together a big collaborative book. Here's my contribution! (I'll probably come back and tweak this a bit yet)
